What a quiet mirror looks like from my chair

A quiet mirror is one that does not load, or that loads very slowly, or that loads only intermittently. I do not know from my chair whether the mirror is off the network, has been retired, or is just having a bad day. I only know what my browser tells me, and my browser tells me the page did not come up.

Over a few visits, if the same mirror is consistently quiet, I start to notice. I do not treat one bad visit as a signal. I treat a run of them as one.

What the rebuild is not

The absence of ranking is what makes a rebuild across mirrors easy. If one had been labelled the main one, I would still be trying to use the main one out of habit. Because none of them is, I can shift without ceremony.

What I do while the quiet mirror stays quiet

I keep using the two that answer. I do not repeatedly test the quiet one to see if it has come back. Testing an unavailable address does not help me and it wastes attention.

Every so often, when I have a moment, I try the quiet one to see whether it has come back. If it has, I go back to my old rotation. If it has not, I stay on the two.

The rebuild is not permanent. It is a state I am in while the mirror is quiet. If the mirror comes back, the rebuild resolves.

What I would do if two mirrors went quiet at once

Two mirrors quiet at once is a different situation. That is a signal to slow down rather than to keep visiting. I would use the third and read the front page carefully. If the third looks different from what I remember, I would close the browser rather than sign in.

A three way quiet is a signal to stop for the day. Nothing productive comes out of trying to force through it.

None of these situations is common. Naming them helps me act correctly in the rare cases they show up.

Small habits that make the rebuild easy

  • Do not build my visit around one specific address in the first place. If any one of three has to be usable, none of them is special.
  • Read the address block on this site each visit. The block is short, and reading it means I never rely on a stale memory of which was first.
  • Do not add the addresses to a bookmark. Bookmarks make one of them feel primary again.
  • Keep the copy button between the block and the paste. That habit is the same regardless of which mirror I chose.

The point of the rebuild

The point is that a quiet mirror is a small nudge, not a crisis. My visits keep working. My rebuild is a shift in which of the three my hand reaches for first. Nothing about the market has changed for me in a way that matters to the visit.
